I’m gonna be honest with you, most marketing sucks.
Schools and books love showing us marketing from big brands such as CocaCola and Gucci.
But if you decide to learn from them and try to replicate what they do, you’re going to waste a sh*t ton of money.
These big brands are allowed to do whatever they want in their marketing, no matter how ineffective they are, because they have the money to burn.
We don’t.
We need to get the most out of our money.
My goal with this article is to share with you what makes marketing work and you’ll soon realize how horrible your competition is.
Which is a good thing.
If you can be the person with the marketing right, you are going to easily outcompete other businesses because they simply don’t know what they are doing.
So buckle up and let’s get started.
—
I want to show you this:
Pretty famous ad. The typical ad books and business schools love showing us.
They even ran it as a billboard in Times Square as well.
And people even consider it as the ad that solidified Tommy Hilfiger as a designer brand.
Now firstly, no magic ad is going to magically change anything. Life simply does not work like that.
There was an enormous amount of work before this, an enormous amount of work after this. This is somewhere in the middle, so it's a great thing to point at.
The reason people like to say that it changed the whole brand is because it's a great story.
“We put a crossword puzzle on a billboard and amazing, everything changed!”
Let me ask you a question: when I showed you this ad, which is supposedly one of the best ads humans have ever created, did you feel an irresistible urge to go buy from this brand?
“YeAh BuT iT’s FoR bRaNd AwArEnEsS”
Do you really want to spend money and get nothing back?
Or do you want to actually get the most amount of money out of your advertising dollar?
Marketing’s goal is to make you money.
Anything else that does not result in this is not real.
Forget about branding.
Forget about brand awareness.
Let’s focus on getting results, shall we?
You VS A Tsunami of Ads
Every day, we are bombarded by ads and other marketing material.
Everyone is trying to sell us something, non-stop.
Your message needs to cut through the clutter.
You need to be able to stand out from all of the other ads that you are competing against and get the reader to pay attention to YOU.
This means that you can’t be boring.
This means that you can't be confusing.
Your message needs to be clear, powerful, persuasive, and compelling.
A good example for a Michelin star restaurant could be:
"Treat your loved one to a truly world-class, romantic fine dining experience at the Aurora Jutan Michelin restaurant."
This is the kind of stuff that excites and interests the target audience.
Which brings me to point number two.
What Does the Fish Like?
Something crucial is deeply understanding who you are talking to and understanding what interests them.
If you don’t get them with what they want, they are not going to pay attention to you.
I like to tell people: When you go fishing, do you bait them with a croissant?
Of course not! You bait them with what they want, a worm.
So you need to consider “who likes what I’m talking about?”
If you are selling razors and shaving supplies, 99% of the people who will be interested are going to be men.
“BuT wHaT iF a WoMaN wAnTs iT tOo???”
Of course we’re not going to hunt them down.
If they wanna buy, let them buy.
But we need to focus our effort on who has the highest chances of conversion.
If two razors and shaving supplies companies create the same ad but one targets men and the other targets women, who do you think is going to make the most money?
The Biggest Opportunity of Our Times
Now that we have a clear and compelling message…
Now that we have the perfect target audience for our message…
Now we just need to reach them.
Social media is by far the superior way to reach them.
Specifically Meta ads.
Every marketing medium has an enormous waste built in. TV ads, billboards, newspaper ads… with all of those you can be absolutely 100% sure that the vast majority of people seeing it are not the right people for your business.
Meta fixed this.
Everyone uses Instagram.
Everyone uses Facebook.
This is what makes us able to get our message in front of our EXACT target audience..
And the best part? It’s STILL a largely untapped goldmine.
Some of your competitors might use it… but most will have no idea how to get the most out of it.
For most people it’s like driving a car for the first time. Yes, you’ll make some forward progress. But if you have a driver’s license, the ride is going to be so much quicker, smoother and pleasant.
And if you still don't want to use it, I guess you don't like money.
Or, you might struggle to find the time to learn and apply all of this stuff.
Pretty common problem. As a business owner, you are expected to do everything.
And this is why we exist.
Many business owner are unable to grow simply because they don't have the time to learn and apply everything they need to make more money.
And if that's you and you do want to grow, feel free to reach out.
